An important part of America's history is disappearing. At age 76, the road known
as "The Main Street of America" and "The Mother Road" needs our nation's help. While
individual states and counties through which the Route 66 Corridor passes are doing
what they can to help maintain this vintage thruway, we have seen that more must
be done to preserve and maintain what has become an integral part of our American
heritage.
In 1999, in response to the recognized need to preserve the rich resources of the
historic highway, Congress passed an Act to create the Route 66 Corridor Preservation
Program. Administered by the National Park Service, the program collaborates with
public and private entities to identify, prioritize and address Route 66 preservation
needs. It provides cost-share grants to successful applicants for the preservation
and restoration of the most significant and representative properties dating from
the route's period of outstanding historical significance, 1926 through 1970.
The Act calls for $10 million to be set aside for this program through 2009; however,
only a limited amount of those funds has been made available by Congress, and has
begun to decrease each year. We need your help!
By submitting this online form, I firmly support the appropriation of more government
funding to preserve this famed highway through the Route 66 Corridor Preservation
Program to ensure that Route 66 receives the security and protection it deserves.
