Route 66

Route 66 is more than a road—it’s a piece of living history that winds its way through eight states. There’s no other route in the U.S. that illustrates the scenery of our country and the American vacation experience more vividly. But with the introduction of interstates and the popularity of air travel, its landmarks and history have begun to fade.

In April 2003, Hampton embarked on a journey to help save Route 66. Our volunteers hit the road for a 66-day road trip across all eight states of Route 66. Jim Conkle, national preservationist and historian, led the Hampton Route 66 Caravan pier to pier from Santa Monica to Chicago.
